Cubicle Warfare Author Visits CBS

Cubicle WarfareThis clip from CBS celebrates the cubicle's 40th birthday as a workplace institution. They were joined with Cubicle Warfare author John Austin. He shows Harry Smith some mean pranks for the office. One of the pranks involves taping a can of tuna underneath a co-worker's desk. Another prank involves posting sticky notes that say so-and-so wants to see you so that everyone in the office will go to that person's cubicle. A third prank is a package with the bottom cut out and filled with peanuts so that when the person picks it up the peanuts spill all over his or her desk. The last two pranks are pretty harmless but the can of tuna prank is just wrong and stupid because eventually everyone in the office would be smelling it.

Cubicle Humor: My Cubicle

The My Cubicle parody of James Blunt's song "You're Beautiful" offers some comic relief for the many workers stuck in cubicles five days a week. A Denver Post article about the funny song explains how the Keith Hughes' song jumped from the radio to the web.
"It was just one of those kinds of things you do and forget about," Hughes says. "The general public is not really supposed to know about this stuff since it's really just for the radio stations. The next thing you know, someone gets a hold of it and it's all over the Internet.

"I don't need to be personally famous for this, but I don't want someone else taking credit for it either."

Fans familiar with Blunt's song can instantly catch the lyrical similarities and sing along with "My Cubicle," a ditty about the life of an office drone:

"My job is stupid, my day's a bore, inside this office from eight to four. Nothin' ever happens, my life is pretty bland. Pretending that I'm working, pray I don't get canned."

"My Cubicle" was just another parody Hughes' company recorded in December and made available to their affiliates on their website and in their daily prep e-mails sent out in January.
The video makes the song even funnier because it shows a guy who is clearly extremely bored in his cubicle.

Casting Call for Cube Fabulous

Cube FabulousMonster and Shorn Entertainment have launched a casting call for Cube Fabulous, an office makeover show. Workers can apply to appear in an upcoming episode of Cube Fabulous by applying on the Cube Casting Couch website set up by Monster.
Beginning Labor Day (September 4, 2006), workers can submit an application to be cast in an upcoming Cube Fabulous episode by visiting the online "Cube Casting Couch" - powered by Monster - located at the co-branded microsite www.cubefabulous.monster.com. In addition to submitting a workspace photo and optional video, interested participants must complete a personal "Cube Profile," which asks a range of questions including the three things they can't live without, how co-workers would describe them and what their fantasy job entails. Those entering also have an opportunity to "sell" their submission in a 100-word essay explaining why they should be chosen. The Cube Fabulous season two premiere episode will air online in mid-October; subsequent shows will air every two weeks following.

"Cube Fabulous appeals to young professionals in an entertaining, light-hearted way by bringing edgy home makeovers to the workplace. One by one, the team will revitalize drab cubes or office space where many people spend more waking hours than anywhere else each day," said Diana Nicholson, Senior Vice President, Consumer Products, Monster. "Our relationship with Cube Fabulous also represents Monster's entry into broadband video, allowing us to reach a large audience and key demographics with creative work-related programming."

"Shorn Entertainment took an irreverent and fast-paced approach to the makeover genre which really struck a nerve with our audience of 21-34 year old cube dwellers seeking an entertainment escape." said J. Scott Berman, Creator of Cube Fabulous and Founder/CEO of Shorn Entertainment. "Cube Fabulous taps the emerging office lifestyle of a new generation of professionals looking to express themselves at work. We'll continue to capture a fresh perspective on work life in Season two by making over both traditional and non-traditional work environments."
If you have a boring or messy cube this might be a good opportunity to get it fixed up. You can also see some webisodes from the new Cube Fabulous show here.

Office Tips From The Office

The Best Week Ever has present a guide for what is safe and what is not safe at work. They had some help from Kevin and Angela from The Office.
Going an entire summer without The Office would have been too much to deal with. Thankfully they're airing webisodes over at NBC.com to keep us updated on our favorite Pennsylvanian office staff all summer long. Kevin and Angela took a sick day and snuck over to Best Week Ever to guide us through what's SFW and what's NSFW via a handy instructional video. So check it out… and make sure you take notes.
The video even includes a section on MySpace etiquette. It is far more silly than it is informative but that's because it is really just a funny promotion for The Office webisodes. You can see the webisodes here.

Design Studio Offers Slacker Tips

W+K Portland has some advice (thx Adland) for slackers looking to slack off at work without getting caught. Here are a couple tips from W+K Portland's list of ten.
  • Look Busy: Having papers spead all over your desk helps, as do pencils which are widdled down to the eraser. If you have to walk somewhere, keep your head down, and walk quickly (this also works if youre trying to avoid being called over to do work. NEVER MAKE EYE CONTACT!). Carrying clipboard with you while moving around also helps.
  • Fool their eyes: If you cant rearrange your office, perhaps employ a service like WorkFRIENDLY which acts as a proxy to mask any website that you visit. You can mask the sites to look like a Word Document and at a quick glance, they look like any other document. If the boss gets too close, click the Boss Key and WordFriendly will hide the website with pseudo-word document.
  • Choose a profession people dont understand: Im a web developer. Most people dont REALLY understand what you need to do to be a web developer, so I might be doing a blog post, but theyre thinking Im working. Golden!
  • If you really want to be a slacker you will still need to get any reports in on time, read memos, attend meetings, etc. There are some things even slackers can't avoid without consequences.

    Work Distraction: Office Invaders

Office InvadersGamersGame.com has a post about an interesting way to kill some time at work: Office Invaders.
KewlBox.com and Baskin-Robbins have a new online game called Office Invaders. The game provides a Space Invaders type set-up. You play an an office worker up against invading executives and office managers. You can choose one of two characters to battle the invading office invaders: Peter in Operations or Dawn, a Senior Account Executive. You use a rubber band ball to fire rubber bands at the advancing co-workers. The sound effects are pretty good. They include some funny comments from the invading IT workers like, "have you tried rebooting?" Office Invaders is decent way to kill some time at work or take out some frustrations.
Just don't let the boss catch you playing.

Fictional Bosses You Wouldn't Want to Work For

For some comic relief Fast Company has a slideshow of nine fictional bosses you should be glad you don't work for.

  • Gordon Gekko -- Wall Street
  • C. Montgomery Burns -- The Simpsons
  • Tony Soprano --- The Sopranos
  • Ebenezer Scrooge -- A Christmas Carol
  • Darth Vader -- Star Wars
  • David Brent -- The Office
  • Dr. Evil -- Austin Powers
  • Cosmo S. Spacley -- The Jetsons
  • J. Peterman -- Seinfeld

These would be tough characters to work for. Except maybe Peterman. There is probably a worse fictional boss out there than him. How about the two bosses in Trading Places -- they wouldn't be much fun to work for. Or what about the bosses from The Firm?

The worker ends up as a janitor at a mega-retailer. "Big Box Mart" debuted late Thursday during NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." Shortly after that, at 9 p.m. PDT, the animation became available on MSN Video and at JibJab.com.

    The Work Blind Curtain

A blogger going by the name of tongodeon, has come up with an inventive way to make it appear to his employers that he is actually busy working even if he is not. He calls his idea the Work Blind.
I had buttercup666 stand in my neighbor's cubicle and take a picture of me hard at work. Then I straightened the photo, undistorted it, and cropped it to the area in the doorway. I took it to Kinko's where they printed it onto vinyl, and grommeted the top with a kit that [info]matrushkaka bought me. The result: The Work Blind.
While the idea is very innovative it is hard believe that his employers won't notice. But it might provide for some well-needed comic relief at work.

Site Wants Your Stories About Being Fired

Job search engine Simply Hired has launched a website called Simply Fired where people can submit their stories about being fired from a job. The website stars Mark Jen, the blogger who is well-known for being fired from his job at Google because of his blog. He was later hired by Plaxo. Mark Jen will be a judge for a contest the site is running to find the most compelling story about why someone was fired from a job.
"After I experienced a very public firing, many people reached out to me with their stories about losing their job," said Jen. "Most of us are embarrassed about being let go, but it happens all the time-often in very interesting ways. And once you start that conversation, everyone wants to listen in and share their stories. SimplyFired.com is a great way to help start this dialogue online."

Grand Prize "Loser" to Win Big The Simply Fired Contest will challenge site visitors to submit their funniest, saddest, most outrageous stories about getting fired or laid off. The judging panel includes Guy Kawasaki from Garage Technology Ventures, Chris Pirillo from Lockergnome, and Phil Kaplan from AdBrite and founder of F**ked Company, among others. The judges will select a Grand Prize "Loser" who will win a trip for two on The Apprentice Legend Cruise with other cast members fired by Donald Trump on the award-winning reality TV show.
The contest will accept submissions until August 26, 2005.
